Finding the 10 largest values in Excel without sorting
also applies to dates and text as well
For any selected range containing numeric data, you can quickly list the ten amounts which are the most (largest) values within the range. If you wish to list a number of values other than 10, just specify the quantity (e.g. 5, 20, 50, etc.) on the "Other" text box. This technique provides the auditor a quick way to identify such values.
Note that the data does not need to be "pre-sorted".
First, select a range in Excel which contains the numeric values to be tested:
Step 2 - Select the menu item "Numeric tests|Extreme Values"

Step 3 - Specify the name of the Excel work book

Step 4 - Using an Explorer type interface - locate the workbook

Step 5 - Select the name of the sheet containing the data

Step 6 - Select the numeric column to be tested

Step 7 - Specify the number of items - e.g. top 10

Step 8 - Click the "Run" button.

Step 9 - View the results in a grid. Note that the results are also written out to a text file for easy import back into Excel.

An audit program guide is available for download (410 pages - PDF). There are a number of tutorials to help you get started. Examples are included with the materials for the course "Managing the business risk of fraud".
The system also has audit programs for auditing specific business processes such as Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, General Ledger, Procurement Cards, Employee Expense Reports, etc.
